Before I get started, I’m going to give you the opportunity to duck out right now. I know that some people get offended by gallows humour, and this post is gallows humour. If you read this post and take offence, well, screw you, I warned you.
Right then, let’s get to it.
Top Ten Songs in honour of Hurricane Katrina:
- Going Nowhere – Andrea Parker (dedicated to those stuck in gridlock trying to evacuate)
- You Could Feel The Sky – Boards Of Canada
- Breakin’ Up The House – Colin James and the Little Big Band
- Look Happy, It’s The End Of The World – Matthew Good Band
- A Common Disaster – Cowboy Junkies
- It Can’t Rain All The Time – Jane Siberry
- Alert Status Red – Matthew Good
- Evacuation – Pearl Jam
- When The Levee Breaks – Led Zeppelin
- New Orleans Is Sinking – The Tragically Hip
Also, I hear that the mayor of New Orleans has declared a fatwa against Katrina and the Waves.

I got one…perfect circle’s remake of zeppelin’s when the levee breaks…

I purposely didn’t pick any shitty remakes of classic songs. Besides, “When The Levee Breaks” is already on there.

I have an old one and a new one:
Here Comes the Flood: Peter Gabriel
and
At the bottom of everything by Bright Eyes
Oh, my morning’s coming back,
The whole world’s waking up
All the city busses swimming past,
I’m happy just because
I found out I am really no one
(in reference to the help they got)
and for humor
Rock you like a Hurricane: Scorpions

We need humor to get through dark times, and we need hope. I humbly submit this song of hope to all who are suffering from Katrina.
THE RISING SUN
There is no house in New Orleans
There is no rising sun
Hurricane ruined this easy scene
Oh, Lord, see what she’s done
Oh, Mother, grab hold of your child
Can’t ride, gonna have to run
Mother Nature is running wild
Gave each wild man a gun
Oh, Father, guard your family
You can’t trust anyone
Fight later, now it’s time to flee
Brighter days are yet to come
There’ll be a house in New Orleans
There’ll be a rising sun
Proud people always find the means
To do what must be done
There’ll be a house in New Orleans
There’ll be a rising sun
The job is big, it’s not easy
To undo what’s been done
There’ll be a house in New Orleans
Remember nine eleven
Turn from the mud and misery
And see the rising sun
And see the rising sun
(Turn toward the risen Son)

I stumbled in searching to see if anyone else is releasing a new song dedicated to the hurricane victims. Just want to let you know first- I’ve written and composed a song from my heart all the way from NJ for these people and expect to see it up the end of next week @ dreammakersmp3.com.

I wrote a song called “The Ghost of New Orleans” for a Stotm Aid benefit concert that we did at our church last week. People liked so much that they encouraged me to post it on the web. I have very good friends on the Goulf Coast, but wrote this song for the homeless people who I’m afraid might be forgotten over time. You can down load it for free/donation at http://www.dreammakersmp3.com

what about songs that were written specifically for the hurricane katrina disaster to new orleans and the gulf coast?
my favorites are:
the legendary KO “george bush doesn’t care about black people”
and
ric farrell “washed away (on the streets of new orleans)”
and
follow no trends “noah’s ark”
there are many others including kanye west (written by chuck d, of public enemy) “george bush doesn’t care about black people”, prince “sst”, stevie wonder “shelter from the rain”, chuck white (“rise up”), and many others.
#14 by shan on 17 October 2005 - 6:11 am
correction:
the kanye west song is titled: “hell no we aint alright.”

What about the song “Wake Me Up When September Ends” since i live in New Orleans and I was living in Houston in September(which I hated) that song always reminds me about i couldnt wait for Sept. to end.
#18 by dean philip brooks sr on 22 March 2006 - 1:20 pm
instead of making fun of the tragedy that happened on the gulf coast. one artist i know by the name of Sr1 wrote a song called”we will rebuild” praising the courage of the people who survived , suffered, and are determined to restore their land and lives.not to mention in praise of the heroes who rescued the inhabitants. if someone wants to give a listen to the song i’ll send them a copy. cynism and finding fault with the situation isn’t helping those people solve their immediate and long term problems.

High, the songs are okay, but at least SOME OF THE SONGS have at least some sights of hope in the songs, I mean if I were a victim, I’d only want positive songs to my soundtrack to what I have to go through.
#29 by David on 28 November 2006 - 5:43 am
Hi my name is David. I wrote and performed the song posted by Jason on May 5th ’06. I agree with Sammy from Fri Oct 13th ’06. What I had to go through with my home being flooded was something I would never want to go through again. I think my song brings out the pain with a touch of humor concerning the Katrina Aftermath. I have been asked to include it on an album being compiled of Katrina Songs. Listen and comment. I would love to hear what you think of My Katrina Song.

regardless of how you feel about hardcore hip-hop, Juvenile’s “Get Ya Hustle On” and the accompanying video (featuring three kids in Bush, Cheney and Nagin masks dropping water bottle-parachutes onto the post-flood wasteland of the 9th Ward) is probably the most prescient and compelling musical reaction so far to the terrible storm and its more horrific aftermath.
premise: kanye was right. the government – both federal and local (“your mayor ain’t your friend he’s the enemy”) has abandoned you and your city, so to get back on your feet you better start cook up some rocks and start dealing. choice lines:
“errbody need a check from FEMA/so he can go and score him some cocaina/and i ain’t gotta ball in the Beemer/man i’m tryin to live, i lost it all in Katrina”
true story – Juve was just one of far too many whose home was destroyed in the storm. trap-rap may be the trend but here it’s not about the life of luxury, it’s a matter of survival when legitimate commerce has abandoned him and his city.
“we starving, we living like Haiti without no government/niggaz killin niggaz and them bitches is lovin it/fuck Fox News i don’t listen to yall ass/couldn’t get a nigga off the roof with a star pass”
If the government and its enablers can’t help the people then the people have no reason to heed the word of either entity. “Get Ya Hustle On” is not the expected plea for the powers that be to take notice of the city in need, but for the city to take care of itself – by any means necessary – in defiance of the callous indifference of white America.
it’s a damn good beat too.

I wrote 2 songs that I would love to see go to help the rebuild efforts, but I don’t write music! I only have the
words and melody. Can anyone help? Here
is ” QUEEN OF QUEENS ”
Submerged in shame in a sea of flames
She heard her people cry
As an angry sun rose up each day
against her blackened sky
A numb world watched in disbelief
none believin’ what was seen
All asking how did this happen to that
beloved queeen
FOR SHE’LL ALWAYS BE THE QUEEN OF QUEENS
A LADY FAIR, OUR NEW ORLEANS
OUR PRECIOUS HOME, SWEET PRECIOUS HOME
In a watery grave around her she sat in
grim despair
Now who of us can save her, somehow we
all must care
But she will rise again someday, like a pheonix from the fire
In a fortress fitting for a queen,built
up strong and higher

I wrote one for a little stint I did down there as an insurance adjuster. To the tune of Folsom Prison Blues:
I’m goin’ down to Nawlins
Gonna find a job
I became an adjuster
Now I’m gon’ get shot
Well I hate it down in N’awlins
They all want me to die
When I see more claims a comin’
I hang my head and cry.
When I left Oklahoma
My poppa told me son
You’re going down to New Orleans you’re gonna need a gun,
But I packed my bags and suitcase,
Headed on the road.
If they kill me on the bayou
Won’t nobody know.
Well if they’d free from this ‘djustin’,
if that stack of claims weren’t mine,
I’d probably go back home and I’d work at the 5 and dime.
Far from swamps and bayous
That’s where I want to stay…
and I’d drop that adjustin’ workload
out on Ponchartrain.

recently posted video of public domain protest folk song about Hurricane Katrina from 2005, “Destroyed By A Rising Flood,” at following link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrpbF-0Xvk0
“There was a town called New Orleans
Destroyed by a rising flood
And it’s been the ruin of many a poor boy
And lord, I know, I’m one.
“My mother lived near a levee
Where a small crack could be seen
They gambled and did not repair it
Down in New Orleans.
“My father was a laborer
Helped build the tall buildings
On top of what were once wetlands
That protected New Orleans.
“We heard about Katrina
And were told to evacuate
But if you can’t afford a car
There is no way to escape.
“The global warming hurricane
It overflowed the lake
A flood broke through the levee
And many people sank.
“Go tell my baby sister
`Food and water are on the way’
While she’s abandoned outside a stadium
For over three nights and days.
“Both feet in the water
Above us the hot sun
But I’ll be back in New Orleans
Before my life is done.”
And it’s been the ruin of many a poor

Great post and nice list of songs. I recently started a digital record label that focuses on socially conscious music called HelpingHaven.com – http://www.helpinghaven.com. We create original music to help raise funds and awareness for various causes such as disaster relief, homelessness, domestic violence, environmental issues, child education, and others. Our disaster relief song, Made It Through The Storm, is a great song about the challenges that are faced by those affected by disasters.
