As far as I know, they _perfectly_ model the behavior of electromagnetic fields, and they do it with a mathematical elegance even I can appreciate. Now squeezing the real world into those equations is the hard part, of course: "Assume the cow is an infinite plane of charge and surround a portion of it with a circular pillbox..."
