After 21 hours of travel and waiting, I’ve finally procured a hotel room in Portland. That’s right, it’s OSCON time again!

I left Hilo at 3:30pm on July 22nd. Three hours and forty-five minutes later, after getting stuck in Waimea for an hour because of roadwork, I dropped off my rental car and began the wait at the airport. The plane left at about 8:50pm, and I got bumped up to Economy Plus (hurrah!). Arrived in LA, waited around there for an hour and a half, then departed for Portland. I arrived at my hotel at about 10:00am (Portland time, so that’s 7:00am Hawaii time), and my room wasn’t ready.

Went walking around Portland, bought some soap for Alice and stumbled into Powell’s for a while. I came away with two books, and hit the hotel again at noon. My room still wasn’t available, so I went walking again. Got lunch, picked up a t-shirt from Eddie Bauer, and just generally wandered around air-conditioned malls until about 2:30, at which point I finally got into my room.

One thing I can say about Portland is it’s hot. Damn hot. You’d think living in Hawaii I’d be used to the heat, but it’s upper-nineties here and Hilo usually only gets into the upper-eighties. Trivia: Hawaii and Alaska are tied for having the lowest record high — 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Strange but true.

So now I’m essentially sitting around until I can pop over to the convention center to check-in, as the earliest I can do that is 5pm, two hours from now.

As with last year, you can follow along with my OSCON 2006 posts.

Edit: Or you can’t. Weird, the category link isn’t working right. Huh.

Edit2: Weird, it works now, but I’m seeing heaps of WP database errors. Time to email Geof
