Nick Ing-Simmons

Nick Ing-Simmons, the developer of Perl/Tk (amongst other things Perl), passed away on Monday. We here at the JAC use Perl/Tk all over the place for graphical front-ends to various tools, so we’re endebted to Nick’s efforts. He’ll be missed.

The Mac is back.

After being in Memphis for the past week and a half, I got my MacBook back yesterday. The backlight hasn’t flickered yet, so I assume they fixed whatever needed fixing. Luckily, the service details sheet sent along with my MacBook says they replaced the “APP-630-7253 PCB MLB, 2.0GHZ DC, SMS/ST”. Hurray for a new APP-630-7253 PCB MLB!

Ads make their triumphant return.

After reading a story about the internet’s biggest Google whores, I got sick with envy and decided to put ads back on canspice.org.

You may notice, however, that there are no ads on the front page. I make the pledge that now and in the future the front page of canspice.org will never have ads.

Ads appear on individual pages and posts. And if you’re particularly keen, you can see the lone page that has two ad blocks. I put two ad blocks on my last.fm recently played PHP code page for two reasons: 1) it gets the most traffic of any page or story on this site, and 2) regular readers never see that page.

I should make the point that even though I initially put ads up here in November 2004, I have yet to receive any money from them. Keen readers will note that that means I’ve made less than $100 so far. In other words I’m not buying a Porsche a month with this stuff. Or even a coffee a month, for that matter. Probably only enough to pay for hosting, which is all I could ask for.

TCJ: Titan Explained.

I guess I should explain a bit about the Titan. See, it’s the biggest ship in the game. It’s ten kilometers long. Take a look at this comparison chart. See the big gold thing with a big shield on one end? That’s the Titan that ASCN built. Now, go to the top right corner. In the L-shaped pattern, my Merlin is the third dot from the right. If you go to the left from the L-shaped pattern, there are some bigger ships. My Caracal is the third big ship from the right of the L.

And I thought my ships were big! This Titan is like a mobile station, it’s huge! And it’s got a Doomsday Weapon that can wipe out almost anything within 400 kilometers!

And there’s only one.

That’s why this is such a big deal!

TCJ: Titan Unleashed!

Rumors have been flying around the EVE universe for a while now, and it’s official: a Titan has been built! CYVOK, the leader of the largest alliance in the game (Ascendant Frontier) made the big announcement yesterday. Rumor has it that they didn’t even build it in ASCN space, and they even built fake capital ship building docks to throw off their enemies!

Wow! I can’t wait to see it!
