		<description>Superb that the JCMT was doing inclinometry at the time - didn&#039;t that happen before with a reasonably large earthquake?  I&#039;m sure I&#039;ve seen a less extreme version of that plot before.</description>

		<description>UKIRT&#039;s built on a sort of &quot;floating&quot; platform so that in case of an earthquake, the whole telescope doesn&#039;t shake while the ground shakes. The shear pins hold the telescope in place when the ground&#039;s not moving, but they&#039;re designed to snap when large-ish (higher than 4, I think) earthquakes happen and allow the telescope to ride it out.

I would be shocked if the other telescopes didn&#039;t have similar systems.</description>
