It’s just a short four days to the beginning of OSCON ‘08 in sunny Portland, Oregon. Here are some tips and tricks from an OSCON veteran:
- Portland in July is typically fairly warm. Pack t-shirts, shorts, and sandals. By all means leave the socks at home, and if you feel compelled to bring some, don’t wear socks and sandals. Ever.
- Don’t lose your ID card! While security isn’t exactly tight at OSCON, the aged door guardians will make sure you have a valid ID card when you try to get into tutorials or sessions.
- Either pack an extra bag or pack lightly. You’ll undoubtedly pick up a lot of swag from vendors, should you decide to visit the exhibitors hall. Which you should, because you can get free stuff! And don’t forget that Portland is home to Powell’s Books, one of the largest bookstores in the US.
- The Oregon Brewers Festival conveniently overlaps with OSCON, starting on July 24th and running to July 27th. Portland is also home to many excellent breweries and brewpubs, including Rogue and McMenamins. If you’re of age and like to imbibe, do so!
- The MAX Light Rail and the rest of the Portland TriMet system is free within the downtown core. This includes the stop next to the Convention Center where OSCON is held. Yes, it’s a free train trip to downtown!
The most important thing to do at OSCON is to have fun with your fellow open source devotees! I’ll see you there!
