I just returned to the midwest from 10 days in Hilo. One of the things I loved best was the plethora of great local restaurants and shops, and the fact that most of the chains are located in the sprawl zone away from the quaint downtown. I can't imagine living there and picking a chain over a local joint.

COFFEE -- Starbucks (drip) coffee is indeed horrible. I found that espresso (Americano in my case) is the same at both Starbucks & Kope Kope, bit cheaper at Starbucks. Moreover, Starbucks remains open until 10p (the one across both Walmart & Panda Express) unlike Kope Kope which closes around somewhere around 5p-7p.

Besides all that, if service is poor, why should such a business be kept in business?

PASTA -- I was not much impressed with pasta at Cafe Conerto; service was great however (so was & is at Pescatore). The runny meat sauce was unimpressive, the only thing my pasta came with. Thankfully, I was served a smaller portion (that I think is worth for the price), so I did not have to struggle much.

A second time I had manicotti, not bad & not enough; had to arrange for second dinner. Cafe Concerto should charge ~$15 and just serve more & better. (Ah, that reminds me of Sombat's.:)

SMOOTHIE -- I went once through the Onomea Bay scenic drive rather gingerly during weather of light rain. I shall make another trip on a sunny|dry day to taste the smoothie. Thank you.
